Rules of Relationships in of Mice and Men and the Breakfast Club

Rules of Relationship Kyle and I chose to investigate connections as they are depicted in motion pictures for our introduction. Between us, we watched â€Å"The Breakfast Club†, â€Å"Dead Poets Society†, â€Å"Fried Green Tomatoes† and â€Å"Of Mice and Men. † Today I will talk about how rules of connections were utilized in â€Å"The Breakfast Club† and â€Å"Of Mice and Men†. I will list the guidelines depicted in these motion pictures and furnish you with understanding on the happenings of every film. I imagine that â€Å"The Breakfast Club† and â€Å"Of Mice and Men† worked superbly of exhibiting the guidelines of connections. Of Mice and Men† is a great story with an immortal message. It's excellent film and novel. This film is extraordinary show for anybody from thirteen to ninety-nine years old. In â€Å"Of Mice and Men†, there are two rough men, Lenny and George, who are old buddies. Lenny, played by John M alkovich, is a mild-mannered, huge, and delicate character, who is lamentably intellectually incapacitated. In light of Lenny's concern keeping a vocation, the siblings are compelled to move every now and again. Lenny likes to contact things that give off an impression of being delicate or ameliorating to contact: hair for example.Lenny cherishes creatures. George, played Gary Sinise, attempts his hardest to be an old buddy. He is by all accounts caught by the reality of having an actual existence that is loaded with troubled things. George is around 35-40 years of age. He is persevering, reliable, persistence, mindful, and a truly dependable man. All through the film, George appears to have gotten the worst part of the deal. Simultaneously, I feel that George's gathering Lenny additionally positively affected George. George took in a lot of tolerance from his companionship with Lenny. This story finishes in trajedy.George is compelled to do what he believes is best for all by slaug htering Lenny after Lenny accidently executed a lady. With Lenny's demise, George is allowed to proceed onward with his life and not need to stress over dealing with his companion. The other film I will talk about is â€Å"The Breakfast Club†. This film would be delighted in by individuals running in age from middle school to moderately aged. It's all the more a more youthful depiction of how life was and is in secondary school. It's an account of how five probably totally various understudies end up in detainment on a Saturday and how they find and utilize their likenesses to make the day more enjoyable. As the story advances, they learn about one another as well as about themselves. In â€Å"The Breakfast Club†, Andrew Clark, the muscle head played by Emilio Estevez , consistently is by all accounts satisfying others: his dad, his mentor, his companions. They all consider him to be an individual that he wouldn't really Like to be. Instead of disillusion them, he just becomes who they think he is. This makes a ton of inner indignation, which surfaces frequently all through the film. Brian Johnson, Anthony Michael Hall, exceeds expectations scholastically yet has minimal fearlessness to demonstrate for it.He will in general be no picnic for himself, and can't deal with disappointment. Rigid and hesitant, he seldom twists the standards. My preferred character in the film, by a long shot, is John Bender, played by Judd Nelson. He has a great deal of issues he couldn't care less to discuss, and he manages them by utilizing dry silliness and mockery. Allison Reynolds is a psychopath. She's messed up. One thing's without a doubt, Allison Reynolds, played by Ally Sheedy, LOVES consideration. So she has her characteristics. She utilizes dandruff as â€Å"snow† on an image she's drawn. She eats Cap'n Crunch and sugar from a Pixie Stix on bread as a sandwich. She doesn't represent the principal half of the film, and when she at last beginnings talkin g, she doesn't stop. Allison leaves you pondering who she truly is, yet abnormal or not, she's unquestionably amiable! Claire Standish, the ruined whelp played by Molly Ringwald, helps me to remember the young ladies that I was unable to remain in secondary school! She puts herself above every other person in the film. Of course, she has her issues, much the same as all young people. Be that as it may, some way or another, to every other person, her family's riches and influence and her collusion with the â€Å"in† swarm appears to lessen whatever issues she may have.To different characters, she's simply proud Claire. â€Å"The Breakfast Club† happens Saturday, March 24, 1984 in Shermer High School. Shermer High School is situated in the town of Shermer, Illinois. â€Å"Of Mice and Men† happens in California at some point in the 1800's. It was never precisely expressed when it occurred, however it was when bondage was as yet being used. I decided to apply the â €Å"Rules of Relationships† as per Argyle and Henderson. The â€Å"Rules of Relationships† is characterized in eleven standards, recorded on page 261 of the Communications Mosaics textbook.A not many of the guidelines are as per the following, remain standing for a companion when they aren't anywhere near, share your victories and how you feel about them, give enthusiastic help, and trust and trust in each other. In â€Å"Of Mice and Men†, I found that eight of the guidelines were utilized. Generally George is continually standing up for and safeguarding Lenny, giving help, trust and trusting in Lenny, helping him, causing him to feel great, isn't excessively reproachful of Lenny, secures Lenny's confidences, and disregarding his issues. Lenny utilizes what he knows similarly as rules of connections go.Lenny is slow-witted, so he does what he can by giving help and simply being a hero. In â€Å"The Breakfast Club†, three of these principles are utilized. They all give each other enthusiastic help, they trust and trust in one another, and they cause each other to feel great. In â€Å"The Breakfast Club†, they battle, however now matter what they're discussing, they appear to favor one side and shield their case. Despite the fact that Bender made Claire cry, he gave her help soon there after. All the youngsters trust and trust in one another by determining what they never really up in detention. Each of them appears to have an awful story of why or how they wound up in detainment. Every story has extraordinary load on destroying what their identity is or demolishing their notoriety. To enable his new companions to feel better, Bender gets everybody high off of smoking weed in the film. In â€Å"The Breakfast Club† very few of the â€Å"Rules of Relationships† were shown, however that is significantly because of the way that they started as outsiders set up by conditions outside their ability to control and develope d to become companions through the course of the film. â€Å"Rules of relationships† portray how a perfect relationship would be.A film utilizes a portion of these guidelines, yet for sensational and genuine to-life purposes connections like this aren't typically observed. I believe that â€Å"The Breakfast Club† gives us what progressively present day connections act like. â€Å"Of Mice and Men† gives us a progressively genuine, consistent with life sentiment of genuine kinship. I imagine that a film like â€Å"The Breakfast Club† might not profoundly affect the American lifestyle, however for the time being and perhaps for another brief time longer, this film will show how secondary school's capacity. â€Å"Of Mice and Men† is an immortal film, which shows companionship to be an incredible thing. The morals of both

511 Midterm Free Essays

511Part 1. Zomeworks: Four Decades of Design-Driven Innovation in the New Mexico Desert 1. )I accept that no, Zomeworks ought not forcefully seek after the sun powered water warmer market. We will compose a custom paper test on 511 Midterm or on the other hand any comparative point just for you Request Now I accept this for some reasons. Number one being that flammable gas is one of the most plentiful characteristic assets that the world has and on the off chance that people are not being made up for utilizing an alternate innovation, at that point they won't transform, it is miserable, however it is reality. In today’s present society people don't care for change nor do they like increasingly costly change. What I mean by that is it is very costly to have a sun oriented water warmer introduced. I believe that Zomeworks has an extraordinary chance to additionally boost their present portfolio as long as they truly begin to concentrate on it. Zomeworks is an innovator in Passive Solar Technology. I feel that this sort of innovation isn't notable and that by seeking after the sun powered water radiator showcase they are going to bounce their creative wave too early. I think a decent sign of this is the way that Zomeworks is creating items directly here in New Mexico and I have not found out about them until this midterm. Zomeworks need to gain by the entirely significant resources it brings to the table. For instance, Zomeworks Passive Solar Tracker is an extraordinary item for them to get their image name perceived. While the entirety of this is only my sentiment I accept that so as to truly make an informed examination on whether Zomeworks should seek after the water radiator showcase, the primary thing I would investigate is the general objectives of the outside financial specialists, since they hold the greater part stake in the organization. I would need to take a gander at the genuine funds of the organization. I would direct research to discover real measure of amounts sold, incomes created by every item type, and creation costs related with every item. Likewise, it is critical to know the firm’s expenses of upgrading its current portfolio and its advantages against the expenses and advantages engaged with concentrating on the sun powered water radiator advertise. Least Winning Game is characterized as, â€Å"the first significant market open door for another innovation that is sufficiently restricted to give an unmistakable objective to the innovation and item advancement endeavors in the short to medium term and, nd adequately huge enough to set up the establishment for the drawn out business and monetary achievement. It requires iterative twofold connecting procedure of understanding the business open door for the innovation and connecting that to specialized needs. † For instance, a base dominating match for Zomeworks would incorporate a wide range of features. A triumpha nt methodology at Zomeworks would incorporate further item and innovative advancement that empowers and moves its objective customer. The organization realizes that its objective purchaser base is generally contained either â€Å"going green† supporters or those off the network who require their particular items. Zomeworks basically needs to utilize an increasingly compelling technique to impart its message of â€Å"why† buyers should buy its sun oriented water radiator. El Bulli achieved the correspondence of its vision by featuring an outflow of advancement and a group that â€Å"constantly looked for new strategies and new hardware with which to experiment†, as opposed to the message of running a café to bring in cash. Zomeworks needs to concentrate on overhauling the center significance behind its whole portfolio before it can effectively extend its scope in advancing its sun oriented water warmer, Zomeworks right now obliges the specialty purchaser who has a conclusive requirement for a sunlight based item. On the off chance that Zomeworks will venture into the purchaser sun oriented water radiator portion, work should be done on conveying the ecological advantages of this item. A triumphant procedure at Zomeworks would incorporate utilizing their client target portions that show the most development potential. . ) Full Credit Leadership is one of the key drivers in running an organization. Pioneers have numerous strategies and authoritative structures to browse contingent upon the sort and size of the firm. With regards to Zomeworks I believe that a casual hierarchical structure and initiative strategy would be the best. What I mean by casual hierarchical structure is the acknowledgment of contr ibution from all representatives. Since Zomeworks is of a littler scope they can manage the cost of the assorted contributions of their representatives. While it is significant for a business to have a structure set up as it develops, I feel a proper structure can have extraordinary disadvantages while an organization is still little. Representatives in a new company need to feel increasingly like accomplices in the company’s vision. Putting representatives in inflexibly characterized jobs when the organization is sufficiently little to guarantee that all employees’ cooperate can make a crack in the connection between entrepreneurs and workers, which can enormously influence the exhibition of the organization. Vital dynamic is commonly more concentrated in littler associations than in bigger organizations, again because of the generally less number of chiefs found in little organizations. What I mean by casual initiative is all around delineated in the Monnalisa Clothing Case. â€Å"The originator is a basic component of our arrangement of control,† says a Monnalisa item administrator. â€Å"He realizes when to take care of the imaginative powers of the organization or when to cause to notice basic creation, monetary, or quality markers. As expressed for the situation, Monnalisa is a medium-sized Italian organization that structures and sells garments and embellishments for kids. Monnalisa is an extraordinary case of an organization that has formal (results control) and casual (social control) instruments to deal with its simultaneous and progressing requirement for imaginative plan and proficient creation forms. At Monnalisa, there’s no goal to constrain inventiveness, howe ver progressively the organization is attempting to offer the beauticians a base structure by running a progression of inner gatherings toward the start of each assortment. This assortment instructions empowers the group to characterize the destinations regarding what to make (and its quality guidelines), when to make it (design weeks and accessibility at the shops for the start of the period direct the planning), and at what target cost. Fundamentally, the organization has presented new programming that permits the beauticians to screen the results of their creation(s) in monetary terms (through cost cards) and being developed terms (through specialized cards) as thoughts progress. With this apparatus, we don’t need to restrict inventiveness at allâ€actually we need to boost our imaginative potential and keep away from the issues we had in the past when assortments wound up to be fragmented on the racks since we chose not to create some low edge prototypes,† the CFO stresses. I imagine that for Zomeworks this kind of overseeing among innovativeness and business would really be entirely simple. Zomeworks the executives structure appears as though it is extremely solid and they comprehend what every one of their jobs is. I imagine that the hardest part for Zomeworks would be the way that the representatives that work there are so shrewd and have such huge numbers of various thoughts that if would be hard downplaying input and clarifying why the executives picked one thought over the other. 3. ) Full Credit Today, so as to be serious it is fundamental to perceive the estimation of â€Å"knowledge† and to make progress toward an improved ROI and better administration of your organization’s information resources. Maybe your association has just perceived the estimation of the information that it has spent its well deserved cash-flow to acquire. Assuming this is the case, you may as of now be finding a way to formalize the assortment of important information picked up for a fact and arranging information in manners that advantage the whole association. These new methodologies are aggregately alluded to as â€Å"Knowledge Management†. â€Å"The truth is [knowledge the executives and best practice sharing] is useful for business. The quicker and all the more viably we can share thoughts, the better we can make our item, the better we can serve our clients, the better we can manufacture a submitted group of workers, andâ€bottom lineâ€the better we can acquire benefits for our investors. One way that Zomeworks can expand its inward information catch and inside information sharing is to manufacture their communitarian competency. Collective competency is a firm’s capacity to realign its inside assets and abilities to the changing condition by utilizing on outside assets and capacity procuring instruments, for example, key unions, acquisitions, and joint endeavors. Zomeworks could incredibly profit by teaming up and sharing their aloof sun based innovation. For instance, lets state that Zomeworks works together with the organization that is selling most of the sun oriented water radiators in Europe. They could utilize this coordinated effort to learn blemishes that the Europe item may have or vis versa. Likewise, on the off chance that they banded together with this European organization their image name would be out there more and this kind of coordinated effort could in the long run lead to a joint endeavor and the passageway into another economy for Zomeworks. 4. )With regards to the subject of deciding your objective market you need to contemplate what your item is and how your item will be utilized. Regardless of whether rural private southwestern United States is the correct objective market for the sun based water radiator isn't the greatest worry for me. I think the greater inquiry to pose is, is it the main objective market for the sun oriented water radiator and the appropriate response is no, it’s not. I would concur that sunlight based water warmers are progressively compelling in the southwestern United States. I don't think, notwithstanding, that the southwestern United States is the main

This prompts the 'word harm' control by constraining the essayists to utilize a bigger part of their mind when pondering sex. We should return to the announcement, 'With regards to sex, individuals will lose their psyche on the off chance that you state it as an outsider looking in. The control is that in the event that you state that you are stating a messy word.'</p><p></p><p>Censorship paper subjects that says as an outsider looking in ought to never be said in light of the fact that it is constantly accepted that the individual who says the word is stating it to signify 'I'. The scholars of these papers expect that the individual they are reprimanding comprehends what they are discussing. These restriction paper points are so off-base for an assortment of reasons. To begin with, individuals will consistently expect that the individual talking is stating 'us'. Second, it makes a distinction between the speaker and their crowd that inevitably prompts lost correspondence between the speaker and their audience.</p><p></p><p>Another extraordinary model is the point at which the author says, 'I need to have the option to speak uninhibitedly about sex. It is my privilege as a resident of our country. On the off chance that I don't talk openly regarding this matter, I am a double crosser to my nation.' These restriction paper points remove the author from the discussion and cause them to feel less sheltered, and accordingly, they don't feel safe.</p><p></p><p>Sometimes the control exposition subjects become a type of discipline. Restriction paper themes on governmental issues, religion, and other comparative points are fundamentally the same as. On the off chance that somebody in the political or strict gathering blue pencils something from coming out, they are holding a type of good predominance over the majority.</p><p></p><p>Censorship paper points ought to be viewed as hostile just on the off chance that it is composed with malignant plan. On the off chance that the subject is totally and absolutely with the expectation of complimentary discourse and free conversation, the control article points ought to be saved for all crowds. Obviously, that accept the journalists are proficient and taught enough to not permit their perusers to see the restriction subjects coming.</p><p></p><p>In resolution, oversight exposition themes ought to be offered distinctly to the perusers that are happy to have the conversation. There ought to be no oversight of any points that are considered shameless or indecent. The control should possibly exist in the event that it is finished with malignance or if the author is utilizing the article as a type of punishment.</p>

Historys Fury Henri Bergson and Friedrich Nietzsche Shed Some Critical Light on The Sound and the Furys Jason Compson - Literature Essay Samples

I remember the first time I really heard classical music. As long as I can remember I have loved music, but growing up, no matter how many times my parents dragged me, kicking and screaming, to the symphony, or my piano teacher tried to teach me a Mozart piano sonata, I was overcome with boredom. Nothing about this collection of instruments, or notes, no matter how intricate, how subtle, how stirring a piece was, meant anything to me. I remember that my only joy at the symphony was to wait until a movement was over, praying that some fool would clap when everyone else knew full well that we had to wait until the entire (seemingly unending) piece was done. Even as I got older and began to realize that there must be something to these musicians who those I respected deemed geniuses, I never could get a hold of the music, something eluded me. Last year I took Music theory, I began to love the notes and the cadences when on the page, but still when put together my only appreciation was i n my ability to distinguish a Plagal cadence from a half cadence or a major scale from a minor one. Then one day my roommate played for me her favorite piece of music, Beethovens La Pathetique. All of a sudden, it made sense, those years of struggling to understand what it was all about disappeared, and I understood in an instant the genius of a man who could produce a sound that made the world, with all its shortcomings seem alright, that took the futility out of existence. All of a sudden I was desperate to hear as much classical music as I could, to make up for lost time.Henri Bergson, in his essay, An Introduction to Metaphysics, explains as best one can, the meaning of that instant where, for me, classical music made sense. In Bergsons terms, I was experiencing a moment of intuition, a moment in which I had an absolute knowledge of La Pathetique. I was experiencing a moment, which I could never have gleaned from all the symphonies or music classes in the world. In this instant of intuition I experienced as Bergson says: the kind of intellectual sympathy by which one places oneself within an object in order to coincide with what is unique in it and consequently inexpressible (Metaphysics, 24). Without this moment of intellectual sympathy, classical music would never have made sense, no matter how many times I learned that it was the purest form of music, no matter how many times I distinguished the plagal cadence from the half cadence. All of these lessons were what Bergson terms analysis or, the operation which reduces the object to elements already known (24). No matter how many times one analyzes an object they cannot truly comprehend it until they have done so intuitively. For all his talk of intuition being the only pure knowledge, Bergsons article is extremely analytical. Because he is trying to place absolute knowledge in the debate between rational and empiricist philosophy, his essay is very complex. The intuition of which he speaks seems out of gr asp for an every day person. However, it is just the opposite, intuition is the simplest feeling in the world. The simplicity of intuition becomes much clearer through reading Friedrich Nietzsches essay titled, On the Advantage and Disadvantage of History for Life. Nietzsche clarifies Bergsons notion of intuition by putting it in the context of history. His point is that history, be it individual or communal, is useful up to a certain point, but that all truly great deeds are done when the agent, if only for a moment, forgets all that he has known and becomes unhistorical. Therefore no matter how much import we place on a knowledge of history, we mustconsider the capacity to perceive unhistorically to a certain degree as the more important and fundamental so far as it provides the foundation upon which alone something right, healthy and great, something truly human may grow (History, 11).The startling similarity between Bergsons moment of intuition and Nietzsches unhistorical moment can be clearly seen when we compare the two philosophers notions of the fleeting duration of these moments. Consider Bergson: while we canbyimagination, solidify duration once it has elapsedthis operation is accomplished on the frozen memory of the duration (Metaphysics, 30). Nietzsche is essentially positing the same thing about an unhistorical moment when he writes, [t]he unhistorical resembles an enveloping atmosphere in which alone life is generated only to disappear again with the destruction of this atmosphere(History, 11). An unhistorical moment is, like a moment of intuition, expressible only in terms of the past, and yet it is in these moments of our lives that we discover the greatness of things or do the greatest actions. From a historical, perspective they are moments of greatness which are remembered by the ages, but from a personal perspective they are the moments in our everyday lives which push us on, remind us that there are great things to be done and be seen. Wit hout these moments of intuition we never truly know anything but reduce everything to symbols. Further, without these moments in which we forget everything but what is right before us, as Nietzsche tells us, we can like the true pupil of Heraclitus, hardly dare in the end to lift a finger(11-12). Or, put more simply, we cannot achieve any satisfaction in our lives.William Faulkner knows a thing or two about intuition himself, or else he would not ever have been able to write a character who entirely lacks any knowledge of it. Jason Compson is the literary equivalent to a man who has never had a moment of intuition, has never experienced a moment in which he is able to forget the rest of his life. Faulkner makes this clear through Jasons inability to perceive any emotion, or existential moment in life, and therefore, his need to reduce all of these moments to their crudest symbols. What makes Jason such an ingenious character is further illuminated through Nietzsche, who posits that the only way to live without needing moments of unhistoricity, is to be superhistorical. The superhistorical man is one who realizes the unhistorical atmosphere in which every great historical event came to be(12). He has no unhistorical moments, neither does he have need for history whatsoever: the past and the present is one and the same that is, typically alike in all manifold varietyand [has] eternally the same meaning (13). Further, he has no need for the future; as Nietzsche tells us, no one would if asked, want to repeat the previous ten years of their lives, but most would give the reason for their answer as a hope that the next ten years will be better. The superhistorian, on the other hand, does not see salvation in the process, for [him], rather, the world is complete and achieves its end at every single moment (13). He would not relive the last ten years because they will be the exact same as the next ten. Faulkners Jason Compson, attempts to make up for his lack of intu ition by being a superhistorian, and yet is constantly burdened by the past. Without having experienced an unhistorical moment, yet still unable to relinquish the past, Jason is doomed to be miserable and make others equally so.The very structure of the Jason section in The Sound and the Fury, is emblematic of his inability to experience intuition. The chapter, like those which surround his brothers Benjy and Quentin, follows Jason through a day. Unlike Benjy for whom time has no meaning, or for Quentin whose notion of time is so intuitive he must kill himself to escape it, time for Jason is only its most obvious symbol, the clock. In class we termed Jasons problem with time manic linearality. An unhistorical moment is one in which we lose time entirely; time, at least the conscious time of the clock, is of no import and has no meaning, for it is only a symbol. Since Jason is a man who has never experienced a moment out of clock time, he is entirely reliant on this symbol. He does n ot understand why anyone would mistrust the clock, as is clear when his boss looks at his watch and then at a clock on the town courthouse. Jason says [you] ought to have a dollar watch. It wont cost you so much to believe its lying (Sound, 306). He is constantly reminding the reader what time of day it is: [a]long towards ten oclock I went up front. There was a drummer there. It was a couple of minutes to ten (237). Every hour has some scheduled significance for Jason and we soon learn that ten is when the reports from the stock market comes into the towns telegraph office. As is clear from both aforementioned examples Jason is as manically obsessed with money as he is with clock time. Still, Jason does not take risks with money; he does not take risks with anything. Nietzsche posits that any great action requires unhistorical moments in which to conceive them: no artist will paint his picturenor any people [achieve] its freedom without first having desired and striven for it inan un historical condition (History, 11). Since Jason never strives for an unhistorical condition he never risks, nor achieves anything great. The stock market consumes Jasons thoughts and yet he says: I never risk much at a time (Sound, 238). Jason has never experienced a moment of trust, therefore he does not even trust the symbol upon which he relies. Money, to Jason, is the symbol of everything he has lost, while at the same time the only thing he lives for. Money is only the approximate symbol of an objects worth, and yet to Jason who is completely reliant on symbols, it is the trustworthiest judge. This is clear when a man comes in to his store to buy a hame string. Jason is annoyed that the man is spending so much time deciding whether he wanted a twenty cent hame string or a thirty-five cent one(242). He counsels the man to take the more expensive piece of machinery, but when the man inquires how he, who is not a farmer, knows which is better, Jason replies, [b]ecause they dont as k thirty-five cents for it.Thats how I know its not as good(242). Without any inner notion of worth, Jason must rely entirely on monetary symbols to determine which machine is better.More disturbingly Jason uses this monetary symbol of worth to qualify his relationships and emotions. Love is about the easiest way to relate an unhistorical moment, for it is probably the most widely experienced form of intuition. Nietzsche, in fact uses love in his essay to illustrate with an example the unhistorical: think of a man tossed and torn by a powerful passion for a womanhow his world is changed!(History, 11) Jason has never experienced this passion, and therefore can only relate to love with symbols. His only lover is a whore from Memphis named Lorraine. He exchanges money for sex in place of a real relationship, which, as anyone who has experienced any kind of love knows, he could not quantify. When Lorraine, who clearly has an affinity for him, sends him a letter complaining that Memphis is no fun without him and that she misses him. Jason, unable to imagine the emotion of longing, muses: I reckon she [misses me]. Last time I gave her forty dollars (Sound, 240). Love to Jason is only as worthy as the dollars and cents he puts into it.Jason does not have any more intuition of familial love than he does the passionate love of a woman. Caddy, who knows her brother well, offers him fifty dollars for a chance to see her baby daughter. After getting her to give him a hundred dollars, Jason holds the baby up to the window of a moving car, as Caddy waits outside. When she goes to beg him for another chance to see the baby, and asks him how much it will cost this time he says, [w]ell if one look through a hack window was worth a hundred(259). Jason, having no ideal of love himself quantifies even the love between mother and child. This inability to intuit love is no clearer than when he remembers a scene from his fathers funeral. In the memory, he is watching the gravedigger s fill the grave, like they were slapping mortar on it or building a fence, and I began to feel sort of funny (251). There are two aspects to this quote which show Jasons profound lack of conscious emotion: the images of mortar and fence building, two mundane scenes, are not those one would usually use to describe the profound grief at watching ones fathers grave get filled. Even after a falling out with ones parent the sight of their grave would evince more emotive similes. Secondly, Jason comments that watching this scene makes him feel funny; a page later, after seeing Caddy for the first time since she has left their home, standing over their dead fathers grave, Jason starts to feel funny again(252). Jason could be experiencing any number of emotions, and yet in both instances his inability to intuit them, let alone express them, is clear with the abstract use of the word funny. It is clear that Jason is affected by his fathers death. Mr. Compson was an alcoholic, and died from a disease related to drinking. Jason makes very clear the fact that he never drinks: Id just as soon swallow gasoline as a glass of whiskey (291). Yet he does not acknowledge his fathers memory, and in fact diminishes, every time he can, any connection to his father. This trend of diminishing the import of his personal past is Jasons attempt to be superhistorical. This aforementioned Nietzschian term might be dubbed a super-intuition of history. A superhistorian is so aware that history is only a collection of unhistorical moments, that he sees no need to use it to help his present, nor any need to change it for the future: one who has adopted [this standpoint] could no longer be tempted at all to continue to live and cooperate in making history (History, 12). After all, if the past and the present are one static structureof unchanged meaning, then what is the point of working towards a future that will soon be the present and will be the same as the present which has passed.Througho ut the Jason section of The Sound and the Fury, he makes comments that seem to be those of an unambiguous superhistorian. In fact, the chapter starts and ends with the line once a bitch, always a bitch (Sound, 223, 329). To whom he is referring is not clear; regardless, Jasons lack of belief in the ability of people to change is apparent. Jason is his most superhistorical when talking to others or making general comments about race and gender. He condemns the entire Jewish population by saying: its just the race. Youll admit that they produce nothing. They follow the pioneers into a new country and sell them clothes (238). The man to whom he is talking suggests that it is not even the Jews to whom Jason is referring, for even stereotypically the statement does not make sense. However, that is just the point of the superhistorian, all cultures are essentially the same: [a]s hundreds of different languages correspond to the typically fixed requirements of men, so that one who understo od these requirements could learn nothing new from all those languages (History, 13). Thus the Jews might as well be the Armenians as Jasons companion suggests, or the Buddhists, for to the superhistorian they are one and the same.Jason uses this superhistorian logic to convince his mother she should burn a check that Caddy has sent for her daughter Quentin. What his mother does not know is that the check she is burning is a fake, that Jason is actually stealing the money for himself. Although she has repeated the same ritual for years, this time she questions her actions, and tells Jason that she will swallow her pride and leave this check in tact. To this he replies: [w]hat would be the good in beginning now, when youve been destroying them for fifteen years. If you keep on doing it you have lost nothing (Sound, 273). If no moment in history really ever changes its course, then why bother varying from routine or attempting to better ones circumstances.Further, Jason seems to say, i f no one person ever betters history then what they have to say or do is really of no consequence. When his boss tells him that he knows Jason has been doing shady things with his mothers money, Jason reasons that there is no point in trying to stop his boss from chastising him: when a man gets into a rut, the best thing you can do is let him stay there (284). Further, when his boss expresses concern over Jasons recurring headaches and suggests that he go see a dentist, Jason thinks to himself, [i]ts a curious thing how no matter whats wrong with you a manll tell you to get your teeth examined and a womanll tell you to get married(311). This statement is ridiculous except from a superhistorical point of view, for if all advice leads to the same future and does not inform the present whatsoever, then every man may as well be telling him to get his teeth fixed and every woman telling him to get married.Jason might convince us that he is a superhistorian, if Faulkner had not burdened h im with so much history. The reader might believe that he is a superhistorian if he did not constantly contradict himself by letting slip his bitterness over his personal past and the past of his race, the white southern farmer. Jason remarks to himself as he watches some pigeons fly around the town courthouse: Its a good thing I dont have anymore ties than a pigeon(309). This is his inherent contradiction, and the key to understanding his inability to truly be a superhistorian. In explaining the superhistorian Nietzsche quotes a poem by Giacomo Leopardi. The poem has a few lines lamenting the world but resigning to its futility. The last stanza of the quote is, Calm, calm (History, 13). If Jason were a true superhistorian, if he truly had less ties than a pigeon, then he too would be calm. However, as is made clear from his eternal headaches, his griping and his downright rage, Jason is anything but calm.Although he tries to rationalize the misery of his life by being above life it self, history is always there to tie Jason down. It reminds him constantly of what has been taken from his people. Throughout the chapter the reader learns how much Jasons vision of his past informs his present. He is constantly lamenting the state of the south post-slavery. A number of times he makes derogatory comments about the laziness of the black servants who work for him and live in the town: the only place for them is in the field where theyd have to work from sunup to sundown (Sound, 313). Embarrassed by the reputation his family has in the town Jason, in an imaginary conversation with his mother says, you dont hear the talk that I hearI shut them up too. I says my people owned slaves here when you all were running little shirt tail country stores and farming land no nigger would look at (298). Jason reconciles the present state of his family by harkening back to what he sees as their proud past even though it is not a past in which he has any part. The past in which Jason d oes take part also informs his present. The chapter is full of his lamentations about the treatment he is given by his family. He refers a number of times to the familys sacrifice of a plot of land to send his brother Quentin to Harvard. When his mother tells him that he is the only child who has not gone against her, Jason replies that he has never had time to: I never had time to go to HarvardI had to work(224). He laments Quentins ability to go to Harvard and yet is obviously burdened by his brothers suicide. He says at Harvard they teach you how to go for a swim at night without knowing how to swim(243), and later lets on that he is barely able to look at water (291). If Jason were a true superhistorian, these moments of the past would not harm him, yet it is these moments which he blames for his present state of unhappiness, for his stagnant and miserable existence. Jason is not a superhistorian and yet has never had an unhistorical moment. He cannot forget his personal past no r let go of his communal one. This, says Nietzsche, is the worst kind of way to live life: [a]ll acting requires forgettingwithout forgetting it is quite impossible to live at all.[T]here is a degree ofhistorical sense which injures every living thing and finally destroys it, be it a man, a people or a culture(History, 10). Jason is, in many ways, a representative of the bitter and lost generations born during the Jim Crow era in the changing and fragmented south. However, Jasons personal past is far more destructive, as we know, the ever-present knowledge of it drove his brother to suicide. I might aver that Jason is essentially the living symbol of Quentins death. He is breathing yes, but devoid of any joy, any kindness, any faith in the future. The reader often wonders right along with him, when he muses: [s]ometimes I think whats the use of anything. With the precedent Ive been set I must be crazy to keep on(Sound, 294). To many Jason is pure evil, he does not even have the pass ion it takes to be a real villain, he is just bad at the core. But I would argue for nurture over nature defense in his case. For a man never to experience a moment of intuition, watching a baseball game, seeing a painting, sitting on the porch, doing anything, this man has not had an enviable life. In rereading this novel for the umpteenth time, it is Jason that invokes my sympathy the most, for I wonder what would my life be, had I never experienced La Pathetique or a myriad other moments of intuition which, through fleeting instants of absolute presentness, make me want to participate in the future.

Gender Disparities An Examination On Why Bread Winners...

Gendered Disparities; An Examination on Why Bread-Winners Suck In the fall of 2009, Alison Jaggar wrote a paper detailing the struggles that females face in society titled â€Å"Transitional Cycles of Gendered Vulnerability; A Prologue to a Theory of Gendered Global Justice.† After reading and analyzing her work, I would like to counter-argue against her denial that the effects that typical family roles play in society, specifically in regards to the upper and middle class; that men should be the breadwinners and women should be the caregivers. We live in a world where all different types of people face injustice and receive less opportunity in the workforce because of the way that society is set up. Since before we even immigrated to the New World, men have been the workers, whereas women have been domesticated. Today, if a wife were to be divorced from her spouse, she would not have as much working experience as her husband, because she had played the domestic role at home; taking care of children, cleaning, keeping bills on track, etc. It’s due to this that women rarely get a taste of what it’s like to work in some of the higher paying jobs. Furthermore, in a typical family role, men go on to make the money of the house, the children are educated and told to pursue their careers. However, when discussing children’s family roles, the son typically goes on to be the scholar and to seek the higher paying job that could be offered to him, whereas the woman is encouraged to pursue

Cornel West and Pragmatism free essay sample

Cornel West and Pragmatism Cornel West is the most important philosopher in America today. He is a public fgure and influences many people. Cornel is a African American born in Tulsa and grew up in Sacramento which heavily influenced who he is today, the city has a heavily populated with black power groups. West being a devout Christian, never Joined the Black Panthers movement although he did want to. In his early life he praised Malcolm X and the Black Panthers too. He then went to Harvard University where he says it broadened his thought immensely. He then went to Princeton where he got is PhD and wrote his dissertation on Neo Pragmatist thought. Because West is pragmatic, he is an activist and is often in the public eye for his actions. The first time I heard of or saw Dr. West was on television. An HBO show called Real Time: with Bill Maher was on one night and I was viewing it and that was when I first saw Dr. West. They talked in a round table discussion about several modern topics and I liked his view on nearly all the subjects. He helped my decision in pursuing philosophy in school. The host of the show would bring up how he wasnt Just some smart person hat told others what to do, he would go out with the people and change things with them. I admire this and wanted to do the same. This is what makes Dr. West so important to American philosophy in my time. He is showing people and especially the next generation that it can be cool to study philosophy and it is not all about reading and studying. He gets on shows and radio stations and talks about things that everyday people can do. Dr. West makes philosophy worth studying and practicing. He would want people to practice it more than study it. He teaches at ome of the biggest universities in the world and gets paid very well, instead of keeping his money and being wealthy he takes half the salary he deserves and donates often. This is him practicing thought and not Just thinking. What I liked most about Dr. West was that he was funny and humanistic, he was forgiving to others when they disagreed and would constantly be laughing. This was his pragmatic view of philosophy showing in real life. Neopragmatism was a thought movement in the 1960s that was lead by Richard Rorty. The movement was made to bring back classical pragmatism but with more mphasis on language and linguistics. Pragmatism is a philosophy that is an approach that assesses the truth of meaning of theories or beliefs in terms of the success of their practical application. This means that life is made up of our actions and not our beliefs or what we think life should be. It is also very naturalistic, where nature should be saved and thought about. This philosophy of life fell to the waist side in America by the early 1900s and it wasnt till the 60s that it would make a comeback. Richard Rorty started writing on it again and it became a major view again. Without Rorty, Dr. West may not have known about pragmatism till later in his life and that could have shaped his career differently. Neopragmatism has more of a focus on language and linguistics in a sense that these things needed to be taught to every person. We should not talk about how education can help, we need to go out and educate and make sure every person can speak what is on their mind freely. While at Harvard, Dr. West wrote his first major works on ideas from neopragmatism, Marxist ideas, and Emersonian thought. He is writing on popular thoughts of the time and putting them altogether unlike others who take one side nd stay with it. He changes how philosophy is done in America by not picking one side and saying that it is the way to go, he puts many ideas together. This could be because he originally goes to study language and so he understands that our language can be a barrier because it limits us from time to time so we should mix different ideas so we are not barriered in. Dr. West now does constant interviews and makes videos advocating for people to change. This is what I call West Pragmaticism, a way of life that not only leads to one doing actions to help the world, but also advocating for others to do what is humanly ight. Being a Christian, he knows that it is important to go out and to fight for the oppressed and to keep fighting for what is right. This is where he differs from many other pragmatists, they would not be in the public so much and would prefer to keep their views only to the intelligent. I have always wondered why Dr. West is unlike any other philosopher and why other pragmatists are not like him when it seems that being in the publics eye is part of the view. Cornel West is unlike any other modern or past philosopher. He holds no bias for any human, he is not sexist or homophobic r racist, although he does see the difference for all of them. He says that there will always be an oppressed people and it takes years for our minds to change. This country has fought for the slaves, then for women, than for African Americans, and now we are fighting for homosexuals. In one of his interviews he says that once this fight is over and homosexuals are allowed to be who they are, there will be another oppressed group to rise and wanted to be treated equal. He hates that this will keep continuing but he understands it; for this, he does not teach people that they should e accepting of Just these types of people but to accept all peoples. If someone kills someone else, he does not care who it is, it is unacceptable. He first supported Barack Obama for president but since the time, the president has used drone strikes hundreds of times to kill. Recently Dr. West had been speaking on why he believes the president is a war criminal and how he is not the person who he believed he would be. Most think that because both the president and Dr. West are both African Americans that he would support him but Dr. West holds him to a higher standard or that and wont give him a break. Learning from Du-Bois, Dr. West knows that we as people should tight and stand up tor all people, even it the people witn authority over us disagree. The Marxist view is where this comes from. This view is what sets Dr. West apart from most other philosophers, especially in America. Marxism is strongly related to communism in most peoples minds and in American culture communism is pure evil. Many people try to stay away from Marxist ideas because they dont want to be harassed by the public and government. Du-Bois was harassed so much that he enounced the United States and moved at the end of his life, and he was marxist. Our country as a whole has grown since then but not much and that is Cornel West is one of the few promoting Marxist ideas. The others before Dr. West may have advocated that America needs a better education system. Only focusing on where they live and what will affect them, still pragmatic view but not as wide as saying the whole world, especially Africa needs better education systems. Dr. West would say something closer to the latter. He will also credit anyone if he knows that their ideas ere before his and he built on theirs. After watching Just one interview with him one will see that he credits all writers and thinkers before him for his thoughts. Most philosophers will do this at a young age then once they are revered by many, they become egotistical and see their views as correct only. This only makes me admire Dr. West more, he is humble and does not let fame get to his head. So Dr. West is influenced heavily by James, Pierce, Du-Bois, Emerson, Rorty, Malcolm-X, Marx, and others but is very different than they are. He takes racial ideas from Du-Bois and ixes them with socialist ideas from Marx and says that not only do the oppressed blacks need help from the world but everyone does. To him pragmatism is not the best thing to say about philosophy, as thinkers we should be doers and should be making actions in the real world, much different than the men we read about in class. For Dr. West action in the real world is the only thing that matters but without the views and thoughts of others they mean nothing, we must learn about these other thinkers too. Rights for all is what Dr.

This move is in line with its Sustainable Land Management Commitment (SLMC) announced in early 2011. According to its SLMC, McDonald’s will source its raw materials for its food and packaging materials from sustainably-managed lands (McComb). Article Summary An article by Lacey McCraney for NBC Chicago tells of how McDonald’s is making a change to its happy meals, choosing to give a slice of apple and a smaller helping of Fries and either fat-free chocolate milk or 1% white milk in place of the usual soft drink. This change, however, is only optional. Customers can still choose their full portion of fries instead of fruit, and a soft drink. This move is part of the company’s commitment to offer improved nutrition choices. Fruit has been part of McDonald’s optional foods for more than five years, but only 10% of their customers choose this option (McCraney). Justification The choice to study McDonald’s was made for two reasons. First, the company is one of the world’s most recognizable brands in the world and has been in existence for over half a century. Secondly, its prominence all over the globe makes McDonald’s extremely easy to identify with. Analysis McDonald’s operates in nearly 120 countries across the globe, and is known to serve nearly 60 million customers every day. The company’s expansion is attributed largely to its business method of franchising and using joint ventures. Most McDonald’s restaurants offer either drive-through or over-the-counter service. Some franchises also offer outdoor sitting, although this is not common considering they are found in busy and c rowded cities with limited space. Most McDonald’s in highways offer only drive-through service, while those in busy and crowded cities use the counter method or, to a limited extent, walk-throughs. McDonald’s may have started as a fries and hamburgers-selling joint, but it continues to diversify to other foods. It has placed emphasis on the growth of its provision of healthy and diverse foods. Their growth, however, faces certain challenges. According to CNN’s writer Nin-Hai Tseng, McDonald’s faces a number of potential challenges in the coming years. First, the rising cost of food could negatively affect the company’s growth.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Public Corporation Stock Report. McDonald’s Corporation specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The price of food continues to rise, and it could lead to a food inflation of between 2% and 3% in the next couple of years, a ccording to the US Department of Agriculture (Tseng). So far, the leading food chains have not been affected. However, that could change. Secondly, there might be a reduction in McDonald’s growth because of limitation of beverages over burgers. Since most McDonald’s restaurants are a preferred choice for customers looking for fast food, the company has created a number of creative drinks for their customers. However, the time taken to serve customers with these beverages has lunch hour sales to slow down over the years. According to the Wall Street Journal, McDonald’s business at lunch-hour has flattened over the last five years (Tseng). Finally, there is a growing concern that McDonalds may no longer provide a satisfactory return-on-investment. This is particularly applicable with the McCafe machines, which cost over $100,000 to install. This is a cause for concern for small investors. Investing in McDonald’s stock presents a measure of risk, as most sto cks do, but it is considered one of the safest stocks to buy. Even during the economic downturn that America has been experiencing since late 2008, the company’s stock remains stable. This can be attributed to two aspects. First, as the recession hit, America turned to McDonald’s restaurants as a source of affordable food. This kept the business afloat as other companies felt the pinch of the credit crisis. Secondly, McDonald’s continues to appeal to a more upscale market, particularly with its specialty coffee. All these aspects pushed the stock of the company from $55 a share in 2008 to $87.09 in July 2011, a 58% rise (Krantz). McDonald’s has been involved in a number of lawsuits over the years, most of which involve defamation, workers’ rights and trademark disputes. A hugely famous case was a defamation case they filed against Helen Steel and Dave Morris, a gardener and a former postman. This case was famously known as the McLibel case. The two were sued after they distributed booklets with damning information regarding McDonald’s record on health, the environment and the exploitation of workers. The trial went on for two-and-a-half years, becoming the longest running English trial ever. Mr. Justice Bell finally delivered his verdict in 1997, condemning McDonald’s for advertisements that ‘exploit children’ and ‘misleading’. The judge also said the company was cruel to animals and apathetic to workers’ rights (McSpotlight). Nevertheless, McDonald’s was awarded a settlement amount by the courts in the United Kingdom. The company stated later that it had no intention of collecting the 40,000 pounds it was awarded. This case was considered a major embarrassment to McDonald’s.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Conclusion From the three sections above, three things about McDonald’s are clear. First, the company is one of the best managed organizations in the world and has been for the last several years. It is highly profitable, has a remarkably healthy stock and operates in many countries. Its business model is easy to follow, and it is easy to see why competitors, who provide highly similar products, have been unable to muscle the company off the top spot. There is a constant pursuit of excellence in the company, b\no matter where a franchise is located. A company does not gain the reputation McDonald’s has by being mediocre and running its business poorly. Secondly, despite the challenges it faces in the market and the odd lawsuit here and there, McDonald’s future appears to be bright. It seems as though this company, which has been at the heart of the fast-food business for over half a century, could last forever. Whether this remains to be true or not, McDonaldâ⠂¬â„¢s is an excellent example of a company well run, well managed and worthy of emulation. Finally, McDonald’s will always face a hard time from competitors, environmentalists and people concerned with the ethics of the business. McDonald’s has been criticized in the past for its business methods, its aggressive style and its distasteful marketing techniques. Using the McLibel case as a good example, the company got into trouble first because of its reportedly poor business practices. The defendants in the case distributed leaflets that the company considered defamatory, so it sued successfully and actually got a settlement. However, the judge still took a swipe at the company, condemning it as a company that practices bad business and operates dishonestly, to the great embarrassment of McDonald’s. Confucius Essays - Chinese Philosophy, Confucianism, Confucius

Confucius Essays - Chinese Philosophy, Confucianism, Confucius Confucius Confucius Confucianism was the most important thing in Chinese life, but who was Confucius the person? Before the respected philosopher Confucius was born, China was constantly in a state of war. The teachings of Confucius helped to reform China. Confucius lived a long and prosperous life, he was self-taught but spread his wisdom to many, and he was very influential in politics even though he never held a major government position. Confucius was born in 551 B.C., in the state of Lu (modern day Shadong or Shantung Province), into a low aristocratic family. His parents died when he was very young and left him to take care of his older brother who was crippled. He was given the birth name Kong Qui. Confucius comes from the Latin word Kongfuzi, which means Great Master Kong. He married at age nineteen and had two children, a son and a daughter. He was very much a family man though he did travel a lot. Confucius loved music, and when he traveled to a neighboring state of Lu, he became so absorbed in it that he forgot to eat. Confucius was a large man of great physical strength. His last couple years of life were probably bitter due to a number of deaths of his close associates. He died in 479 B.C. at the age of 72. Confucius was for the most part self-taught, although he was not too proud to learn from people inferior to him. At age 15 he set his mind on learning. He derived his learning from the first Chou kings Wen and Wu. He claimed that he wasnt born with his knowledge, which exemplifies his pursuit of wisdom. At age 20, he became a teacher. He traveled widely, gaining disciples who are responsible for writing down his sayings and ideas in the analects. His teaching stressed the importance of traditional relations of filial piety and brotherly respect. He was for the most part supported by his students though he may have received some form of pay from the government. He never refused to teach anyone, no matter how poor they were. Confucius is the first known professional teacher in Chinese history. He spent his life not only preparing himself for government positions, but also preparing his students. Several of his disciples went on to hold key positions in the government. In addition to te aching, Confucius spent much of his time on classics such as poetry and music. Confucius was a large believer that things should be based on virtue, and not on blood. Confucius dream was to have a position as advisor to a wise ruler, but never accomplished this. He held several minor governments positions throughout his life. He held these positions only for short periods of time due to conflicts with his superiors. He went to place to place offering advice to many Chinese rulers. If they didnt take his advice, he would move on to the next place saying that he was not going to force anyone to take his advice. At age sixty-seven, Confucius returned to his native state, but his advice was not regarded there. Jan Chiu (a former disciple of Confucius) asked him his opinion about raising taxes, and he said to do what was in favor of the people. When Jan Chiu went ahead and raised the taxes anyway, Confucius denied him as one of his disciples. Confucius was often asked war advice, and he would say that though he had some knowledge of sacrificial vessels, he had not studied warfare, and therefore he could not help. At old age, Confucius was disappointed because he never got to participate fully in government, and he said, As far as taking trouble goes, I do not think I compare badly with other people. But as regards carrying out the duties of a gentleman in actual life, I have never yet had a chance to show what I could do. Confucius was one of the most influential people in Chinese and world history. His knowledge is still regarded to this very day. Confucius changed everything in China, including education, government, and attitudes toward behavior in public and private life. If Confucius had never lived, the modern world of
